Quick and Easy Yeast Prep

I'm sure I'm not the only home chef who has suffered from a yeast disaster. What makes these moments just so depressing is the many hours of kneading, resting, rising, pleading that go into each bread experience. To spend so much time and end up with a flat loaf of bread is heartbreaking.

There are many factors that affect the outcome of a bread recipe- many of them have to do with the health of your yeast. Here's an easy way to make sure that your yeast is nice and healthy before you invest too much time and hard work.

Prepping your yeast:
1. Your water should be nice and warm, but not scalding. (105-115 F is recommended). Prepare your water
2. Add your yeast and your sugar (usually a tablespoon or so, whatever your recipe calls for)
3. Mix until the yeast is nice and dissolved. Your yeast should look something like this:

4. Now let the yeast mixture sit for about 10 minutes.  When you check back in with your yeast it should look nice and foamy, like this.

If your yeast continues to look like the first picture, you know that you have either scalded your yeast or your yeast has expired and needs to be replaced.  Start over with a fresh batch and continue on with your recipe.
